We think our hospitality designer Allison is pretty great! She brings a creative, artistic eye to our staff. She loves to help decorate for various events we hold in the banquet room. Having an event at The Gables, but you aren’t sure how to adorn the room? Give Allison some of your ideas, and she will make them come to life! We wanted to get to know her a little better, so we sat down to ask her a few questions. Here’s what she had to say!
Gables: Where did you grow up?
Allison: My brothers and sisters grew up right here in Chadds Ford, but my family moved to North Wilmington, DE where I was born and lived for most of my life. So happy we moved here to Chadds Ford a few years ago!
Gables: What was your favorite food as a kid?
Allison: Pizza from “Clanks” in Marcus Hook, PA. It’s a tiny bar/restaurant down the street from Sun Oil where my dad worked, he used to take us there every Friday night. The pizza was made upside down, with the cheese on the bottom and homemade sauce and thick slices of slightly burnt pepperoni on top!
Gables: How long have you worked in restaurants?
Allison: I worked at Bennigan’s and Cafe Bellissimo during High School and college. In my professional marketing & advertising career, I’ve had many restaurant and food industry clients.
Gables: What is your favorite part of your job?
Allison: Two of my favorite things are decorating and making people happy and comfortable. As the hospitality designer, my focus is on entertaining, creating a warm, welcoming and beautiful environment for our guests. My goal is to create an experience they will remember for a lifetime! The casual, rustic elegance here is the perfect venue for me to apply my creative passions and help provide these memorable moments for our guests.
Gables: Do you like to cook at home?
Allison: Baking has always been what I gravitated to, but I’ve grown to enjoy cooking more and more over the last 10 years. My family is very open to trying new things and they love to eat, so it pushes me to learn new recipes and develop my cooking skills. I’m very klutzy, so our joke at home is the food is great, but expect something to be spilled or broken.
Gables: What is your favorite food? What food can you not stand?
Allison: Surf & turf- lobster and steak, although I can really appreciate a great authentic pasta dish! Hate the texture of lima beans and peas. Not a fan of super spicy food.
Gables: What is your favorite wine?
Allison: Enjoy a nice Malbec or Merlot in winter, but a chilled, fruity Chardonnay in spring and summer is wonderful.
Gables: What do you do for fun?
Allison: Anything to do with decorating, art or creating, upcycling old things into new treasures, and spending time with my 3 kiddos, hubby and pets. Oh yeah, and I kinda LOVE SHOPPING and the “thrill of the hunt for a bargain”. Regular at the local thrift and craft stores.
Gables: What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
Allison: Laundry isn’t very fun. And with a big family, we always have A LOT of it!
Gables: As a kid, what did you do that got you into trouble?
Allison: My brothers did all the bad stuff, so I think the bar was set too high to bother competing. The only time I got detention was for purposefully ignoring the dress code and wearing crazy colored tights or non-approved shoes with my uniform at St. Mark’s.
Gables: Funniest work incident?
Allison: Fooling around with the chair height lever in a staff meeting and having the chair drop to the floor (very loudly).
Gables: What is one of your favorite quotes?
Allison: “Creativity is allowing oneself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.” — Scott Adams
Gables: If you could witness any event past, present or future, what would it be?
Allison: The forty days following the crucifixion of Jesus Christ when he appeared to various groups of people and disciples.
Gables: If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
Allison: Play the piano.
Gables: What would be your superhero name?
Allison: I’m not sure! Doctor of Design? Captain Creative?
